Nutritional Counseling
Proper pet nutrition can help your pet lead a long and happy life. We understand that there are many food options available and making an informed decision about your pet’s nutrition can be overwhelming. During your pet’s nutritional consultation, we will partner together to make the best possible nutritional selection for your pet. There are many factors to consider when selecting the best nutritional plan for your pet, including...
Comprehensive Examination
Veterinary care is an important part to your pet's health. We know taking your pet to the veterinarian can be stressful sometimes, so we hope that this will help you and your pet feel more comfortable. Whether it's for a yearly wellness exam or if he/she isn't feeling well, we are here to help.
In addition, we will test and treat your new pet for worms and parasites. Some of the most common intestinal worms found in puppies and kittens are roundworms, hookworms, tapeworms, and coccidia (a protozoan parasite). Puppies and kittens can be infected with worms and parasites from their mother or contact with infected fecal matter. These intestinal parasites can cause gastrointestinal signs such as vomiting and/or diarrhea. Hookworm parasites can even cause your puppy to become anemic (low red blood cells). In some instances, these parasites can be transferred to members of your family or to other pets. Multiple fecal tests will be performed and will allow us to treat your puppy or kitten accordingly.
Pain Management
We take the utmost care to keep your pet as comfortable and pain-free as possible during surgery, and we offer a variety of pain management options, including oral or injectable pain medications and constant rate infusion pumps. We also have a heated surgical table for comfort and improved recovery from anesthesia.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Treating the underlying condition is the best method to correct your pet’s dermatological conditions, and our veterinary team is committed to making the proper diagnosis. Our in-house lab has the technical capabilities to analyze blood samples and various skin test results, and our onsite pharmacy carries a wide selection of dermatological treatments for your pet.
Our highly skilled veterinary team will administer the anesthetic and will constantly monitor your pet’s heath every step of the way. This includes EKG and blood pressure monitoring and assessing oxygen and CO2 levels. During the cleaning we will remove tartar buildup, assess your pet’s gum health, perform any needed tooth extractions, polish teeth, and end with a fluoride rinse.
Kidney Disease Treatment
South Des Moines Veterinary Center provides pet dentistry services. We focus exclusively on dog and cat dental procedures. Pet dental health is critical to your pet’s wellbeing and overall wellness plan. More than 70% of dogs and cats have dental disease by the age of 3! Periodontal disease can cause oral (mouth) pain, tooth loss, and can lead to heart, liver, or kidney disease and infections. During the dental assessment, we will look for the common signs of dental disease including...
South Des Moines Veterinary Center offers veterinary surgery for your dogs and cats. We will create a surgical plan that outlines the surgery and the costs associated with the treatment and discuss them with you before the surgery is performed.
We are proud to offer onsite veterinary diagnostic laboratory testing. Laboratory testing during a wellness visit provides baseline information, which is valuable in rapid and early detection of health concerns. We can provide options and treatments to keep your pet healthy. Many of our standard diagnostic tests can be evaluated while you wait or the next day. Our common laboratory tests include...
X-Ray
Microchipping
We administer microchips at our veterinary center. A pet microchip is a permanent form of pet ID tag. This simple procedure implants a small microchip, about the size of a grain of rice, under your pet’s skin. The microchip can be scanned by veterinarians and animal control officers and can ensure that your pet is quickly identified and returned to you.

Senior Pet Care
Determining the age your pet becomes a senior is based on many factors, such as breed, size of pet, and lifestyle. In general, when your dog turns 7–8 years of age or your cat turns 8–9 years of age, we consider him or her a senior pet.
