As an experienced martial artist I wanted to try something different and more focused on practical self defense skills. I looked around and tried several different programs. I finallly decided to give Bochner's Self Defense a try. I have been pleasantly suprised. Soke Marc and his team have created a great environment for those with and without previous MA experiense. The style can best be described as Jiu-jitsu. Many of his students and instructurs have experience in many other systems. This brings a wealth and diversity of skills. What I enjoy the most is the support from instructor and students in every class. I am not interested in belt progression but it is a practical element for actual learning and skill progression. When you get a new belt I can say you have really earned it. I would recommend for anyone looking to learn practical self defense skills and willing to work hard and understand it is a long term commitment.

Overall

Over the past 20 yrs. I have trained in various martial arts Kenpo, Karate, Muay Thai. Since about April 2014, I have been training at BRSD. Sensei Marc and skilled martial artist provide an excellent training environment that blends traditional and contemporary.

Having trained in several different styles and dojo/gyms, I always had the same questions or fears about trying a new place. Questions like.

Is this going to be practical?

Am I going to spend most of my time doings Forms or Katas?

How are the other people that go there, am I going to feel awkward?

Am I going to get hurt doing some sort of silly kick over my head?

Based on te time I have spent training here. The environment is is friendly and inviting. I have met several new people that I consider friends and look forward to seeing. The training is realistic and safe; plain and simple it works you and learn how to defend yourself.

If you are looking for a place to learn self-defense, this is the place to go.
