Overall

Wagon Trails is the best kept secret in northeast Ohio. You won't leave feeling sorry for the animals like at a zoo. No cages here except for big aviary for birds. The camels are my kids favorite. They know them all by name. Price includes narrated safari, (feed included) and petting zoo. Park is very tidy and workers are always nice. The animals are always hungry. They have zebra, ostrich, bison,kangaroos..hundreds of animals. .Go there. .you will love it.

Overall

Terrible living conditions. I used to like this place and have previously recommended it, but since becoming a parrot owner and more educated about the health and well-being of wild animals, I visited Wagon Trails this week, and was appalled by the living conditions of the parrots in their "nightmare aviary". It is doubtful these parrots have seen an avian vet, or that such a vet has ever been onsite to offer even basic suggestions.

For starters, different species of parrot - whether big or small - which would normally be very territorial and violent to eachother, are all thrown together in the same cage and left to fend for themselves. What happened to the little ones who didn't survive the Thunderdome - only the owners know.

They are all fed the same low quality, seed diet, which is the primary cause of a variety of organ diseases, heart disease, cancer, and early death. Peanuts are also served in the shell, despite their significant risk of aflatoxin contamination, leading to aspergillosis and ultimately death.

Their sole drinking water source - a single uncovered bird bath - was brown and loaded with fecal matter. The communal feeder - a standard bird feeder - was completely caked in bird droppings, as was every other surface. This is no exaggeration. I have seen videos of parrots rescued from poor conditions that were far better than this. The few parrots that we could examine up close - the green cheek and sun conures - had obvious signs of disease, including enlarged nose-holes (nares) from chronic nasal infections, signs of self-mutilation, and open sores.

The majority of the surface area for perching consists of the concrete floor and the sharp metal wire cage - both likely to contribute to foot damage, sores, and loss of toes.

As bad as these conditions are, I can't bring myself to imagine where these poor creatures are confined during the winter months.

As for the safari park itself - species from all over the globe are all thrown together in the same large cage (see a pattern?) , and left to fend for themselves. These naturally grazing animals are forced to eat a low quality pellet-based diet, as there is not one blade of grass in the main holding area, and there likely hasn't been for decades. So they are left to roam around in dry, dusty, barren land, wallow in mud, or swim in treated pool water. There are also large areas of "sludge" where animal waste has been collecting and brewing.

Ironically, the massive grass lawns surrounding the owners' homes are perfectly manicured and mowed.
