De Soto National Wildlife was established in March 1958 after being approved by the Migratory Bird Conservation Commission. The 8,365-acre wildlife refuge center is a shelter for migratory birds and is also a federal fee area. Individuals traveling through the roads of the refuge or entering the refuge must possess an entry permit. The refuge center organizes activities for visitors including children. Activities for visitors include wildlife viewing, environmental education, fishing, hunting, wildlife photography, and interpretation. Junior Refuge Manager activity and Let's Go Outside backpacks are adventure events planned for kids. For these events, kids are supplied with bug jars, field guides, binoculars, and other tools. De Soto National Wildlife, located at Missouri Valley, Iowa, also houses the Bertrand steamboat museum collection in its visitor center.
