Overall

As for the pets, I have had horrid experiences! My kids and I have had many hamsters, most purchased from there. Years ago, the problems weren't apparent, but recently we can't seem to get a hamster to live a month! I've had hamsters live full, happy, lives of 3+ years! I know how to care for them! The last two we purchased lived less than a month and devastated my children. So much so that I refuse to buy another pey from there. The last time I was there (for supplies, it's the only place around...) I noticed two hamsters fighting, they were too old to be caged together. I told an employee who looked like it was "normal" and didn't know why I was telling him. He did go look at the cage because I wouldn't just walk away. He did nothing ultimately. Just opened the cage to startle them and left.

I decided to adopt a Guinea pig (from an owner looking to rehome theirs) for the kids instead of more dying hamsters. Petco feed the Guinea pigs an orange slice daily for vitamin c, which it is true they need, but orange slices can cause sores in their mouthes, especially if given daily! All the cages for purchase are way too small for the cavies, and the staff know nothing on how to care for them. Please educate the staff! These poor animals need good homes, at least care for them long enough that they can get one!

ball pythons

Teach your staff how to properly care for reptiles. Especially Ball Pythons. They CANNOT be kept together! They fight for dominance over the enclosure and get too stressed to eat, and stress can also cause respiratory infections which will kill them without veterinary attention. You need to have one at a time in each enclosure. And FEED THEM RODENTS not crickets!!! They DO NOT eat crickets. Also, raise their humidity to 40% ... not that hard. i have 17 Ball Pythons, I know how to care for them and I hate seeing them in such bad conditions. I would save them all if it didn't mean giving the store business and the ability for you to get more.

Overall

I have bought guinea pigs, fish and birds from Petco, they have all been vet checked are all were in perfect health! They are not overcrowded. Actually when I went to pick out some parakeets we (the clerk and I) noticed that one of the birds looked a little off. She got and checked it out, realizing that the bird might be sick she immediately removed the bird to the back room and then came back and helped me pick out my bird. I noticed that she did put a preventive medication in the water when I walked away to protect the other birds and even wrote on my slip that a sick bird was in the cage when I got mine so that there would be no problem returning the bird if it got sick (not that I would) but my bird was fine and healthy.

Animals get sick and especially small prey animals do not show when they are sick or hurt so as not to attract the attention of predators. If they look or act sick they are usually near death.

I have actually seen clerks refuse sales of fish from a tank and they medicate it when someone was interested in a fish. These people care about the animals.
