- The Bessie Smith Cultural Center and Chattanooga African American Museum is a History and Cultural Institution dedicated to preserving and presenting the TRUE story of African American History in Chattanooga The mission of the Bessie Smith Cultural Center is to preserve and celebrate African American History and Culture in Chattanooga through art, education, research and entertainment. The Chattanooga African American Museum was founded in 1983. In 1996, a new facility became the new home of the Chattanooga African American Museum and the Bessie Smith Hall. This facility is now newly renovated with new exhibits, video presentations, interactive technology, and more stories than ever before.
