General Info
Completed in 1834, the Shadows-on-the-Teche holds many layers of history in its walls and gardens. Built for wealthy sugar planters, Mary and David Weeks, the house remained in the same family for four generations before the property was donated to the National Trust for Historic Preservation. The donation also included more than 17,000 letters, invoices, and receipts, and artifacts spanning the 125 year history of the Shadows. As a former plantation home, the Shadows is a memorial to the hundreds of men, women, and children enslaved on this site and on sugar plantations owned by the Weeks family. Their stories, and those of their descendants, are a vital part of the house’s history and legacy.Completed in 1834, the Shadows-on-the-Teche holds many layers of history in its walls and gardens.
