In the late ’90s, the Stanley family had never grown a grape nor made wine. In fact, only one in the family even drank wine, and she was the daughter-in-law! Nelson Stanley had been installing all of the plumbing and air lines at Chateau Morrisette’s new winery building and had become close to the owner and winery staff, so when they put out a call for grape growers, the Stanley family’s first response was not “why” but “why not?” Nearly 20 years, some viticulture and oenology seminars and classes, and a heck of a lot of hands-on experience later, the family’s Stanburn Winery has become one of the sought-after wineries of southwest Virginia along with Chateau Morrisette. They grow 40-50 tons of grapes in the vineyard and now make 12 wines. Visit Stanburn Winery in the beautiful rolling hills of Patrick County, Virginia.
