They are the place to go for pet products although they are on the high end price wise. All the support staff are well trained.

Preuss pets it the premiere pet store, they have an extensive saltwater and and freshwater aquarium area, and also an extensive bird and reptile area. They have other stuff such as hamsters, guinea pigs, etc. Not big into cats / dogs etc. (although they have adoptions from the local pet rescue for cats, and basic cat / dog food). They primarily let the big chains like petsmart handle the cat dog supplies thing. The indoor has a koi river and outside there are a couple of pond and waterfall setups with plants etc. The building is in old-town Lansing right near the downtown. Staff is very helpful.

WI customer

We travel 7 hours to visit this grand business. We have NEVER had a disappointing experience. Rick and his family are dedicated pet enthusiasts who take their passion out into the Lansing community. We have had assistance over the phone long distance for our salt water fish tank. Michigan has a crown jewel in this "pet store" for sure. I don't know of ANY pet store in WI that would offer assistance in harboring people's pets during a power outage in the dead of winter! God bless the Preuss family for their commitment to the animal kingdom. ♡

Love it!

I haven't had an aquarium in years until a friend gave me one and told me about this place. I took the family to check it out, intending to buy more fish. The staff was incredibly patient with my children and answered all their questions. As for me, they were very knowledgeable, told me what I needed to do, and actually kept me from wasting money on fish before my aquarium was ready.
I have since been back several times. I continue to be impressed by their knowledge compared to the big box stores like petsmart. They may be slightly more expensive than petsmart, but the wider selection and increased knowledge was worth it. I've bought several more fish from there which are all thriving. I have even had a manager there work with me on volume pricing which also offset any price difference. All in all, a great stire

One of the best.....

I have been there many times, the staff is knoweledgable, but still have made some mistakes. I do reccommend this place, it is one of the best maintained, friendly staff, and overall great enviroment! Their selection has always been good, I was always able to walk out with something, and pretty good on their prices, too.

Great Place

I have never been to a place that has such knowledge and willingness to go out of the way to make sure that an animal is in the best conditions possible. Other pet stores tend to just want to make sales, but at this place they really want to make sure you know the ins and outs of animal keeping. I would recommend this place for anyone looking for a new pet.

Unrivaled expertise

In the last month we have purchased a marine aquaruim and an african gray parot from Preuss. This is my first aquarium period, I would have never been able to accomplish what I have in a short amount of time without their time and knowledge. The aquarium manager Steve I feel went out of his way to ensure I was not only satisfied but pleased with his products and services. In three weeks time I have a vibrant berlin system reef aquaruim, stocked with a wonderful variety of live rock, invetebrates and fishes.

We also could not more pleased with our newest member of the family, General Jasper Lee, our congo gray parot. I was impressed with care the staff took with these birds, having raised them from birth. After Spending time in the bird department you will realized what a structured and caring environment it really is.

The shop is well staffed but at busy times you may need to wait a few minutes to get the help you need, it is easy to be patient if realizing the staff member wants to give that customer the attention that is deserved, as you will also receive his/her full attention when you are assisted. They want you to be happy with your pet, this takes time with some creatures, you may only need a dozen crickets or some feeder fish, but ensuring a customer understands the care and maintenace of a chinese water dragon or the calcium requirements of reef tank is time consuming...I know from experience.

In closing Preuss allowed me to accomplish something that would have been basically impossible for me going the route of petco, internet shopping, buying a bunch of redundant books, etc. Preuss is an asset to the community and has unrivaled knowledge and customer service.

Overall
Poor service all over!

I am a very experienced pet owner, and since Preuss has put almost all other pet stores out of business, I often have to go there to shop.

Preuss has never been customer friendly, they may be nice to you, but these people are sizing you up as a pet owner from the minute you walk in.

I asked for a particular type of pet which they told me would be in a week. They were late, of course, you can't blame that on them. However, Preuss has this policy that seems good on the surface, a quarantine for new pets. It's this week after the pet comes in where they monitor them to try to sell you the pet at the best quality. However, many of the pets are right out on the floor and the new ones are quite easily traumatized by the atmosphere.

(I personally watched two staff members ignore a 16 year old boy who was tormenting the rabbits, ferrets, rats, and chinchillas. For a pet store who claims to care, they did nothing while the animals cried and tried to get away.)

So, four weeks later, I was still denied the pet, the staff claims he is sick. When I visited the animals in the store, they appeared healthy, vibrant and active, and I believe the sickness caused only by their environment would've healed fast in the atmosphere of my quiet home instead of their overstimulating environment.

The kicker? I asked them to give me a time frame as to when the pet would be ready. You go out and buy everything, prepare for this little creature, and then you're totally denied? It's crushing, just imagine if I was getting this pet for kids! The staff member told me I would have the pet when he said so, and when I complained, he said he didn't care and accused me of not caring about the pet's health.

They also are not friendly about letting you hold pets, often, they take them out and hold them and won't even let you pet them because, "you're just not trained right." I have a rule, if I can't hold it, I don't want it! These are pets, they need to be held, cuddled, not kept away like the customers have some evil sickness on them!

Bottom line: Preuss cares more about looking good than selling pets and they are WAY OVERPRICED! Go to Soldans, petsmart, petco, but avoid these people. They are expensive, not child friendly, and treat the customers like they were adopting children instead of getting a kid a pet rat.

I have friends in PETA who thought these people took it too far. They are denying pets loving homes by turning off customers!

Adopt or head to a different store, this is not a quality business.

Awesome place

This store is an awesome place to go, even to just look around. The store gives off a good vibe as soon as you walk in. The staff is very friendly and knows what they are talking about. They have a great selection of animals, from fish to reptiles to cute little kittens. They will happily answer any questions you have. I have bought a Leopard Gecko, and a cute little kitten from there and i am happy with both. I live in Jackson and usually drive to Lansing to shop there.
