Earth Science Review.

Dry Falls State Park is one of Nature’s time capsules. It’s a testimony to the Ice Age, the incredible power of water to shape the landscape, and the struggle of a particular Scientist, J Harlen Bretz. This state park and visitor center is organized so that patrons can just stop by to get a bite, an expresso, or a quick view. Or, if knowledge is your goal for the day and you have the time, plenty of displays are available with basic info on the history and science behind this natural feature as well as the wildlife in the area. There are telescopes available similar to the ones on top of the “Empire State” building designed for outdoors. There are plenty of overlooks and walkways spaced far enough so people shouldn’t be bumping into each other on the busier days.

If a full-immersion experience is desired, go indoors. I’m told the building is officially called the “interpretive” center. It’s a small museum which includes a reasonably well-stocked book store, displays, a glass wall on one side facing the featured Dry Falls, and a theatre showing the DVD’s which are also offered for sale. The windowed area offers a great view as it slightly hangs over the edge. There’s also telescopes offered which are of the indoor type, to get a close up look of the far side. Smartly uniformed staff are available and eager to answer questions about the park and general science. It’s obvious they paid attention on class. Operational hours are 9-4, 7 days a week. Beware that indoors may be seasonal from: March to October. However, I’ve not been able to confirm that. The outdoor vendors are definitely seasonal. The outdoor attraction is open year-round.
