- The House of the Seven Gables is a museum, in Salem, Mass., with professional guides available, to explain its varied history. Built in 1668, this is the one of the oldest surviving 17th century wooden mansion in New England. In 1908, Caroline Emmerton, a philanthropist and preservationist, worked with architect, Joseph Everett Chandler, a central figure in the early 20th century historic preservation movement, to restore it to its original seven gables. The restored building is considered significant to American architectural, maritime, and cultural history, and is on The National Register of Historic Places. The House of the Seven Gables focuses on education, preservation and community service.
