Preventive Care

Dental Care
We have the specialists on staff to meet your cat’s dental needs. Kind, caring and professional. Our feline dental technicians provide dental cleanings, dental digital x-rays, and surgical tooth extractions (if needed).
Vaccination
They give our feline experts the opportunity to practice preventive care that can help your cat live a happier, healthier, longer life. Together, we can ensure your cat leads the healthiest life possible – beyond simply getting the necessary vaccinations, screenings and treatments.
Behavioral Counseling
Oral disease, if left untreated, can lead to pain and discomfort, which can result in your cat not eating, or other behavior changes that effect their health and happiness. It can also cause heart disease, kidney failure, and even cancer.
Nutritional Counseling
After lengthy testing and research, the American Association of Feline Practitioners is recommending canned food for cats. It may be easier on a cat’s digestive system, causing fewer upsets than dry food, and it has been shown to assist with weight control, an issue for many cats.
Comprehensive Examination
We generally recommend annual exams, so we can do our best to ensure your cat lives the best and longest life.

Behavioral Disorder Treatment
Feline Distemper (FVRCP): (which stands for feline viral rhinotracheitis, calici, panleukopenia) Modified live vaccines are advised because they are non-adjuvanted. Recent studies have shown that there is also a more rapid immunity against feline parvovirus in kitten given a modified live FVRCP.
Pain Management
We use state of the art equipment to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures. Controlling pain during these procedures is essential. Our licensed veterinary technicians are trained to recognize pain and work with the doctors to provide your cat with the necessary pain relief in accordance with the most up-to-date anesthetic protocol.

Infection Treatment

Parvovirus Infection Treatment
All cats should be given core vaccines. These include: feline parvovirus (panleukopenia), feline herpesvirus 1 (feline viral rhinotracheitis, feline respiratory calicivirus and rabies.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Thyroid Disease Treatment
— If your cat is not a current client and has a medical condition that would put them in a high risk category while boarding, our doctors may require an examination upon or prior to admission. This is to ensure we can keep your cat happy and healthy during their stay. These conditions include but are not limited to: Diabetes, Heart Conditions, and Hyperthyroidism.
Heart Disease Treatment
Kidney Disease Treatment
Did you know that 90 percent of cats over age 8 have dental disease? That’s important because it can lead to heart and kidney disease. Regular exams mean we can recommend when to schedule a dental cleaning.
Periodontal Disease Treatment
At Just Cats your cat’s mouth is examined by one of our veterinarians during each annual or semi-annual healthy cat visit. If there are signs of periodontal disease, a dental exam will be recommended. This is a dental procedure under anesthesia that allows for a more thorough exam on each tooth, including digital dental X-rays.

Dental Surgery
Dr. Tommell has been affiliated with Just Cats since 2002. She began her work at Just Cats as an LVT. She received her Bachelors in Biology from Siena College and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Ross University College of Veterinary Medicine with clinical study at Virginia Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine @Virginia Tech. She returns to us from serving as the Director of Shelter Veterinary Services at the Animal Protective Foundation in Scotia (October 2015 - March 2016). Dr. Tommell's professional interests include dental surgery, soft tissue surgery, ultrasound, rescue, and shelter medicine. She lives in the nearby hill towns with her husband and two children.

Laboratory Services
We require that patients are up to date on vaccinations and if they are over 8 years of age, basic blood work is required for their safety. For cats under 8 years old, a smaller panel is required.
X-Ray
Dental Radiology
Just Cats also offers complete dental x-rays, which are crucial in evaluating the health of teeth’s roots and offer the only means of diagnosing resorptive lesions.

Grooming
Just Cats offers grooming services for your cat. Most cats are not fans of grooming and are referred to us because they are unable to have grooming services done without sedation. Our veterinarian will choose the right sedation for your cat so there is no stress involved in the grooming process. The patient is monitored by our skilled veterinary team while under sedation until grooming is done and the patient is awake.
