Born in Syria, Dr. Anas Al-Yazji, M.D., has been in the United States for 10 years. He attended medical school in Grenada, and completed his residency at the University of Toledo. Primary Care
Gynecological exams are important for women to maintain good reproductive and sexual health during at all stages of life. Female patients should visit their gynecologist or primary care provider once they become sexually active or by age 21. Most women will only need an annual visit for a Pap smear, an extremely important test used for the early detection of any abnormal cells in the cervix that could become cancerous. Gynecological exams are also performed when a patient complains of an irregular menstrual cycle, vaginal infection or any sexually transmitted infection. Whenever possible, it is recommended that gynecological exams be scheduled between periods as menstrual fluids can interfere with lab tests. In preparation, vaginal products and sexually intercourse should be avoided 24 hours prior to a scheduled examination.

Flu Shots
Since patients can catch a viral cold with flu-like symptoms anytime of the year, it might seem as though the Flu Season never ends. But, it does. Living in this area of Florida, you are most likely to suffer from the flu between October and May with the peak of activity between December and February. However, every flu season is different and flu viruses can morph as they spread from place to place. This explains why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) releases updated information for each new season. For the 2018-2019 flu season, the CDC recommends the use of injectable flu shots only and has advised that nasal spray influenza vaccines should not be used.
Electrocardiogram
An electrocardiogram (EKG) is a test that records your heart's electrical activity as spikes and dips (line tracings) on paper. When combined with an exercise or treadmill, the EKG heart stress test is used to evaluate how well your heart functions during exercise. Prior to starting the test, several small electrodes are applied as patches to your skin in different locations on your body. Before the test begins, your doctor or a technician may check your blood pressure reading and a blood pressure cuff may be left on your arm for use during the procedure. During an EKG heart stress test, you may be asked to walk on a treadmill or perform some other repetitive exercise. The EKG or ECG will continually record the electrical activity of your heart during exercise and the exercise load may be increased or decreased at certain intervals.

That's why most doctors highly recommend a sports physical prior to the beginning of each new competitive season. Even if your school or recreational department does not require sports physicals, it is a good idea to have an exam once a year.
