Within 48 hours it hardens and turns into tartar that can only be removed with professional cleaning. The more tooth brushing you can do at home, the more long-term dental treatments you can prevent. It is important to use a toothpaste that is specifically made for pets. We recommend using CET enzymatic toothpaste. Poultry is the most popular flavor with pets and it typically makes a great reward during training. We also offer a variety of toothbrush options.

Heartworms are parasites carried by mosquitoes that can infect your pet’s heart and lungs and can cause serious medical conditions such as severe lung disease, heart failure, and damage to other organs of the body. However, many dogs that have been infected with heartworm disease exhibit few if any symptoms. So how can we prevent infection or catch it before it worsens?
Kidney Disease Treatment
For bloodwork, annual testing can show anemia, high white blood cell counts, liver disease, kidney disease, and precursors to endocrine disorders (to name a few). Any variations that are too high or too low from reference ranges or variations from previous history are potential red flags for your veterinarian. For a urinalysis, annual testing shows the urine specific gravity (concentration), signs of infection (bacteria or white blood cells), and pH level. We also look for other markers, such as protein (indicating possible kidney disease), crystals, or glucose (indicating possible diabetes).

Moorpark Veterinary Hospital is proud to offer full-mouth digital dental radiographs (X-rays) as a standard of care for all of our patients who receive dental procedures. Dental x-rays are performed by placing a small sensor in a pet’s mouth in order to acquire images of the internal anatomy of teeth, their roots, and the bone surrounding the roots. Full mouth dental x-rays are essential to the overall uation of your pet’s dental health. They can reveal otherwise unknown sources of disease or abnormality, they establish a baseline for future comparison and ensure that extractions, if needed, are carried out effectively. Microchipping
Microchips can help your lost pet find its way home. The universal product that we use is the AKC microchip. The chip is injected into the scruff of your pet between the shoulder blades. This injection is no more uncomfortable than any other injection or vaccine. As an option, we offer microchipping at the time your pet is under anesthesia. After the purchase of your pet’s microchip, a one time registration fee is required. You can do this by mail or online.

Senior pets require special attention. As they age, they go through many changes, some of which can be painful. It is common for pets to develop lumps – called lipomas – which are made up of fatty tissue. Other lumps can be hematomas, cysts, or cancerous, so it is important to note the beginning of a lump and observe how quickly it grows or changes. If the lump is at least the size of a pea and has been there over a month, the lump needs to be aspirated.
