Dental Care
With many advances in veterinary medicine, we’ve come to learn how dental health has a profound effect on a pet’s overall health. More information about how to brush your pet’s teeth and what to be on the lookout for regarding dental disease can be found here.
Vaccination
The law requires that people owning or keeping dogs and cats in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have them vaccinated for rabies at 3 months of age and then have continued vaccinations in accordance with instructions prescribed by the manufacturer of the vaccine.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Annie Berner is a Pittsburgh native raised in Monroeville. She graduated from Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, PA with a dual BS in cell and molecular biology and organismal biology. From there, she went on to The Ohio State University and earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. After graduating from vet school, Dr. Berner practiced large and small animal medicine in Ohio where she gained loves for surgery, ophthalmology, and dermatology. Dr. Berner moved back to Pittsburgh (she just couldn’t stay away!) with her husband, Jonathan, in 2010. They have two children, Julian and Jacob, and a Boxer named Daphne. All of them love being outside and enjoy spending free time hiking, biking, and swimming. Dr. Berner and her family also enjoy good books and good food. In recent years, Dr. Berner has developed an interest in animal behavior and fear-free patient interactions. She is excited to be a part of the EEVMC team and looks forward to the honor of working with you and your pets.
Comprehensive Examination
In order to be proactive about keeping your pet healthy, the number one thing we provide for your pet is a routine exam. For most pets, this is done annually, but for our senior patients, life changes more rapidly and so they benefit from coming in at least twice a year. Vaccines are also extremely important but because no 2 pets are alike (even though littermates are almost always “fraternal twins/triplets/quadruplets/quintuplets” etc!) neither are the vaccines they need. We make every attempt to provide a custom vaccine protocol for your pet based on your activities and lifestyle. Please be aware that the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania requires a rabies vaccine be current to keep your pet legal!

Pain Management
Surgical declawing is not a medically necessary procedure for the cat in most cases. While rare in occurrence, there are inherent risks and complications with any surgical procedure including, but not limited to, anesthetic complications, hemorrhage, infection and pain. If surgical onychectomy is performed, appropriate use of safe and effective anesthetics and perioperative analgesics for an appropriate length of time are imperative. Pain management is necessary (not elective) and required for this procedure. Multimodal pain management is recommended, and there should be a written aftercare plan. The surgical alternative of tendonectomy is not recommended.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
One of the more common issues we see at EEVMC is a skin allergy in dogs and cats. Causes of skin allergies can be broadly divided into two primary categories: environmental allergies (aka atopic dermatitis) and food allergies. Some animals have exclusively food allergies, some environmental allergies, and some have both. When we suspect your pet has an allergy, we might suggest performing a food trial to help determine the underlying cause of the allergies. Performing the food trial properly is essential so that we can draw valid conclusions and implement accurate treatment. Dr. Melissa Eisenschenk, a board-certified veterinary dermatologist from Minnesota, has kindly allowed us to post the following guidelines for implementing a food trial. In addition, this article contains some comments on grain-free and raw diets that we agree with wholeheartedly here at EEVMC.

On the day of the procedure, your pet is initially given a sedative to relax them. This allows us to place an IV catheter. (With the exception of feline neuters, all anesthetized animals having elective procedures performed will have an IV catheter placed). Once the catheter is in place, we administer a medication that allows us to place an endo-tracheal tube; and once this is in place, they are connected to oxygen and an inhalant gas anesthetic agent, which maintains the anesthesia for as long as necessary to perform the procedure.. While under anesthesia, a veterinary technician monitors several parameters, including electrocardiogram (ECG), blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood-oxygen saturation, and end-tidal CO2. Animals also have IV fluids running continuously for the duration of the procedure. EXPAND
Periodontal Disease Treatment
Oral health is one of the areas in which veterinary medicine has grown the most over the past twenty years. We have become much more pro-active in promoting good oral hygiene in dogs and cats, and in recognizing and treating periodontal disease. In an ideal world, we would all have pets that would allow us to brush their teeth, and we would all take the time to brush their teeth several times a week.

Dental Surgery
Most people are aware if their pet’s breath has begun to smell bad, but most pets are good about hiding any other evidence of dental disease. Although, we always recommend good dental hygiene at home, during routine visits our doctors will do their best to examine your pet’s mouth for signs of disease and may recommend that your pet have a Complete Oral Health Assessment and Treatment. During the procedure, your pet will be anesthetized, have a complete set of dental x-rays taken, and have their teeth professionally scaled and polished. Minor oral surgical procedures can be done at our office if needed, including surgical extractions of diseased or fractured teeth. Major oral procedures including root canal treatments can be done by a board certified veterinary dentist with a referral from our office.

Declawing
There is no scientific evidence that declawing leads to behavioral abnormalities when the behavior of declawed cats is compared with that of cats in control groups.
Spaying and Neutering

Laboratory Services
Despite all that we do to help you protect and care for your pet, injuries and diseases still sometimes occur. For those instances, we have diagnostic tests to help determine what’s going on. Sometimes it requires imaging in the form of x-rays; other times it requires blood tests which can be done both in our In-House laboratory or sent to our reference lab. Once we’ve determined what’s wrong, we can often prescribe medications, most of which can be filled here, to help your pet feel better.

Microchipping
Microchip implants are one of the best ways we currently have to reunite lost pets with their owners. Microchips are implanted between the shoulders, typically when animals are placed under general anesthesia for spaying or neutering, but can be done with animals awake in the span of a routine veterinary visit. Microchips contain an ID number, as well as a phone number to access a database. In the event that a lost pet is found and brought to a facility with a microchip scanner (such as a veterinary clinic, animal shelter, or police station), the scanning facility will call the phone number to access the database, which will contain information about the name of the pet’s owner and a way to contact them, typically by phone. Microchip implants are NOT GPS devices, so pet owners are not able to obtain information about physical location from the implants. At EEVMC we utilize the Pet Link microchip implant, which is an ISO compatible chip. ISO chips are the global standard in microchips, and contain a 15-digit number that is readable by chip scanners both here in the United States as well as abroad. When we implant a Pet Link chip, we upload the client’s pertinent contact information to the Pet Link database. Clients are then able to access the database to make any necessary changes to their contact information. It is critical that this information be kept current.
