Obesity has become an extremely important health problem in the Western world, not just for humans but for dogs and cats as well. Obesity in pets is associated with joint problems, diabetes, respiratory compromise, and decreased life span. Recent estimations suggest that up to 35% of dogs and cats in the U.S. suffer from obesity. There are multiple factors attributing to weight gain in our patients. Our average pet gets less exercise and more food than before. We know from studies that lean dogs live an additional two years compared to obese dogs. At White Rock Veterinary Hospital, our staff can help you with a diet and exercise plan tailored to your pet’s needs.
Comprehensive Examination
Dental disease can also affect other organs in the body: Bacteria in the mouth can get into the bloodstream and cause serious infections in the kidneys, liver, lungs, and heart. If these problems aren’t caught and treated quickly enough, they can result in death. A physical exam combined with appropriate laboratory work can determine if infection in the mouth has spread.

Pain Management
Dr. Kristen Turner joined the White Rock family in 2018 after practicing in the Houston area for 4 years. She has a passion for exotic animal medicine and enjoys the challenge of diagnosing and treating a variety of species. Dr. Turner earned her Bachelor’s degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Sciences in 2009 and her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 2013 from Texas A&M University with honors. During her time at Texas A&M, Dr. Turner focused on exotic and small animal medicine, completing externships at the Houston Zoo and San Antonio Zoo along with several weeks working with wild parrots in the Peruvian rainforest. Her veterinary interests include exotic companion mammal and reptile medicine, dentistry and pain management.

Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Skin problems are common in dogs and cats and can be caused by hormonal disorders, allergies, infections, or parasites such as fleas and mites. These issues can be particularly difficult to treat and should be addressed promptly.
Upper Respiratory Illness Treatment
Although often thought to not be susceptible to heartworm infection, cats can indeed get heartworms. Cats can suffer from a syndrome referred to as heartworm-associated respiratory disease (HARD); the symptoms can be subtle and may mimic those of asthma or allergic bronchitis. Signs of respiratory distress, such as rapid or difficult breathing, wheezing, and panting, are common. Other symptoms include coughing, vomiting (typically unrelated to eating), and loss of appetite or weight. Heartworm infection is more difficult to diagnose in cats than it is in dogs.
Intestinal Foreign Object Removal
We perform a wide array of veterinary surgeries at White Rock Veterinary Hospital. The most common surgeries we perform are spays, neuters and dental extractions. These routine procedures are performed daily at White Rock Veterinary Hospital by our Veterinarians. A trained veterinary technician will assist in surgery. Other examples of surgeries we perform include bladder surgeries, intestinal biopsies, skin tumor removals, knee crusciate surgery, oral mass surgery, intestinal foreign body removal.

Infection Treatment

Parvovirus Infection Treatment
Schedule your puppy for his or her first exam as soon as possible. Until your puppy has received a series of vaccines, he or she is susceptible to many serious but preventable diseases. We will make sure your new dog is protected against rabies, distemper, and parvovirus, among other diseases. Your puppy will also need to be tested and treated for parasites, which are extremely common in young dogs.
Feline Retro Virus Treatment
Schedule your kitten for his or her first exam as soon as possible. Until your kitten has received a series of vaccines, he or she is susceptible to many serious but preventable diseases. We will make sure your new pet is protected against rabies and panleukopenia (distemper). Depending on your cat’s risk, we may also advise vaccinating him or her against other diseases, such as feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). In addition, your kitten will need to be tested and treated for parasites, which are common in young cats.
Bacterial and Viral Infection Treatment
By spaying your female pet, you’re protecting her against potentially deadly diseases, including bacterial infections, reproductive tract diseases, and several types of cancer. You also won’t have to worry about her going into heat. This means avoiding the mess that often accompanies the heat cycle in female dogs and the pacing and crying that happens with female cats. In addition, spaying your pet will help control the dog and cat overpopulation problem, keeping more animals out of shelters.
Ear Infection Treatment
If your dog suffers from frequent ear infections, surgical intervention can reduce their occurrence by improving airflow into the ear canal.

Chronic Condition Treatment

Arthritis Treatment
Canine hip dysplasia (abnormal development of the hip joint) begins when the hip joint in a young dog becomes loose or unstable. If left undiagnosed and untreated, this instability causes abnormal wear of the hip cartilage and ultimately progresses to osteoarthritis or degenerative joint disease. Signs of this condition are pain, reluctance to get up or exercise, difficulty climbing stairs, a “bunny-hopping” gait, limping, and lameness, especially after periods of inactivity or exercise.
Hip Dysplasia Treatment
If your pet is suffering from conditions such as arthritis, hip dysplasia, lameness, gastrointestinal disease, chronic health issues, or back problems, he or she might benefit from our chiropractic services. Professional chiropractic manipulation can help ease pain, improve flexibility and mobility, and even enhance organ function. Chiropractic therapy can also promote healing and improve range of motion in dogs injured during sporting events.

Even if your dog or cat doesn’t have these symptoms, we recommend that you have a veterinarian evaluate your pet’s dental health at least once a year. Bacteria and food debris accumulate around the teeth and, if left unchecked, will lead to deterioration of the soft tissue and bone surrounding the teeth. This decay can result in irreversible periodontal disease, tooth loss, and possibly expensive oral surgery.

We also strongly suggest that you have your rabbit spayed or neutered. Not only can rabbits potentially give birth once a month, but they can also have up to 14 babies at a time!
