Tom Phillips, the owner of Hardwood Restoration Services, is not to be trusted. Not to be trusted for quality work, or for professional treatment, or to do the work that he is paid to do.

Our contract began over half a year ago in the spring of 2011, and while he gladly took the check for payment, he left the work undone, our floors in embarrassing condition, and numerous calls unanswered and ignored. He and his company represent every homeowner's fear when looking for contractors to fix up their home - he took the money, and won’t return our calls. He is one of those dishonest contractors to STAY AWAY from at all costs, unless you want the heartache and headaches that come with protracted false representations, nonexistent customer service.

After beginning extra work on the stairs (which we had asked them not to do), Tom broadened the scope of the contract and we ended up deciding to pay them extra to do our stairs as well. Again, Tom was quick to take the extra money, for services we were pressured to do (who wants a stairway with some steps finished, some steps not?). But in the end, Tom and Hardwood Restoration left our front step in three different finishes, held together with duct tape. It's the first thing any visitors see, and it's terrible. Worse is the enormous gaping hole that is about 4 feet square in our attic that Tom created, taking the wood out to patch another area. Now, that area of our home is 100% unusable by us, and in a dangerous condition (nails, splinters, and exposed wires).

Tom stated last May that he needed to “custom order from Ohio” a replacement front step, and put us off for some time with this excuse. In November, after threats to sue, all of a sudden he stated that he could “make it in his shop” instead, and fix the attic floor quickly with some plywood, but neither ever happened - a lot of inconsistent representations that all add up to a dishonest contractor). Just like other reviews I have come across online, it looks like this is a pattern that Tom undertakes consistently - to be paid and then to run. I just wish I had seen these testimonials before I met him.

His workers also left numerous gouges and scrapes in our newly finished hardwood floor, damaging our living room original flooring. We wish we could go back in time and never have engaged Hardwood Restoration Services or Tom Phillips at all. I strongly advise anyone considering his service to think again.
