Dental Care

A microchip is a tiny electronic device about the size and shape of a grain of rice. It is implanted beneath a pet's skin between the shoulder blades and stays there for the pet's entire life. This procedure is as easy and as painless as a vaccination.

Pain has many other detrimental effects on the body. Pain slows healing, decreases activity, causes behavior changes (such as aggression, anxiety, and depression). Pain worsens diseases like arthritis and potentially some cancers. It interferes with the bond between you and your pet.
Nutritional Counseling
Young puppies and kittens should receive their physical examination and first set of vaccinations at six to nine weeks of age. Additional exams and vaccinations are given every two to four weeks until they are sixteen weeks old. Thereafter regular booster vaccinations should be administered. During your pet's initial examinations you will also receive a behavioral consultation, nutritional counseling, and recommendations on disease prevention. This advice can go a long way towards preventing problems in your pet's adult life.
Comprehensive Examination
Early detection of health problems can allow for prompt treatment. At least once, and perhaps twice per year, your pet should have a complete physical examination. Remember, an animal's lifespan is shorter than ours and their health can change significantly over a 12-month period.

Ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging procedure that complements x-rays and allows our clinicians to better visualize internal organs in the chest and abdomen. This painless diagnostic technique is normally done without sedation of your pet. Ultrasound is invaluable for making treatment decisions for various types of heart disease. It also allows us to biopsy organs such as the liver, and kidney through a tiny "keyhole" incision. Using the ultrasound image as a guide, major surgery is avoided and your pet can often go home the same day.

X-Ray
Dental Radiology
We also offer digital dental X-rays, which are high-definition images that provide a view below your pet's gum line and jaw in order to look for evidence of dental disease that cannot be seen by visual examination alone. This is a wonderful tool for enabling the treatment of dental issues before they become much larger and more problematic.
Microchipping
Each microchip has a unique number. This number, along with information about the owner and pet, are added to a national pet registry. Most veterinary hospitals and animal shelters have electronic scanners for detecting and reading these implanted microchips. If a lost pet is found and a microchip is scanned the registry is called and the owner can be contacted.

Full-time Veterinary Technician/Assistant Lead Courtney V. joined our team in January 2017. She has 9 years of experience working in the veterinary care field. Before coming to work at Animal & Bird Hospital of Del Mar, Courtney worked as a Kennel Attendant for 6 years at a high-volume pet boarding facility. As a RVT, Courtney is responsible for diagnostic procedures, administering treatments, surgical prep, anesthesia, and dental cleanings. Courtney loves performing dental cleanings, and loves knowing that she is making a difference in patient health. Some of the unique qualities that Courtney brings to our office are her positivity and laughter.
Grooming
Senior Pet Care
In recent years, great strides have been made in recognizing the special needs and requirements of our "senior citizen" dogs and cats. Our veterinarians are equipped with the knowledge and diagnostic tools to identify age related problems and formulate realistic strategies to help our pets to live longer and healthier lives. If your dog is seven to nine years of age or older (depending on breed) or your cat is ten years of age or older, it is now in its geriatric years. We will be happy to discuss with you our recommendations for geriatric testing and geriatric diets.
Dog Training
Taylor H. joined our team in October 2020 as a full-time Veterinary Assistant. She is responsible for playing with the animals in our care, feeding and walking them, grooming them, and giving them lots of love! Taylor loves expanding her knowledge of dog, cat, and avian care. She has a background in dog training skills, and helping dogs with anxiety. Currently, Taylor is working on a degree in Biology with a focus in Marine Studies. She has five years of experience working as a dog walker and a pet sitter since she was in high school, as well as time as a Shift Lead at a boarding & daycare facility for one year.
