John rebuilt the carburetor on my classic GTO and it runs perfectly. I knew I was in the right spot seeing many other classic muscle cars at his shop being serviced. I also knew I was at the right place after seeing the meticulous manner in which he and his team maintain the shop. In addition, he referred me to Linwood Piper of Piperformance who took care of a small bit of damage to my car’s paint. I’ll certainly be bringing my GTO and other cars to him going forward. Thanks John!!

This is a well-run shop.

It's not easy being in business and dealing with a complicated public. Far less to be doing the same thing for more than 40 years.

This shop is humble and ordinarily looking from the outside. The work area is exceptionally clean, with some powerful and state-of-the art tools. There are some very skilled mechanics here who can re-build a classic car for you, or machine an engine, or do basic auto repair and maintenance.

I was well-treated with a difficult car situation and these folks excelled- all of them.

An honest reputation doing the same thing for 40 years does not come easily.

I have known John West as long as I have been alive. I remember in the 70's he was one of a few who could work on Austin Healey and get it done right. In the 70's he was building and racing high performance motors and drag racing cars that others could only dream about. John has a talent of identifying issues and tuning high performance motors as well as restoring classics since i have known him. He was a master trained mechanic on Toyota and other imports prior to opening his own shop in early 70's. If you have a classic general motors car there is none better at restoring or building a performance street rod. John does not have time for a bull**itter. some persons are offended by that some posts show it.

John fixed a major problem on my 1954 Olds. He was friendly, professional, and competent. Also the work was much more difficult than expected, yet he charged me a fair and reasonable price. Can't say enough good things about him. Will definitely use him again and highly recommend him.

John is an a**

These over exaggerated happy reveiws obviously written by someone in the business are all lies as this man is one only a mother can love. This guy is not a friendly or trustworthy as he is rude and tacky. Does not listen well (or speak well for that matter)and is only concerned his pockets.

This is the best auto repair shop I have ever been too. The shop is very clean and the staff and mechanics are professional. It was nice to have my car looked over without a long list of fixes. John West noted all the issues and conveyed to me which ones were necessary and which issues were minimal. They considered the age and high mileage of my car with the replacements needed and made their cost effect assessment on what was worth repairing. On top of their excellent and trustworthy service, their repairs are always done in a timely manner and their rates are quite reasonable. Unlike the last reviewer I have always been able to schedule an appointment next day. Best of all, they are open until 6pm so I can pick my car up after I get off work. These guys are the best in Raleigh!

I consider myself extremely lu...

I consider myself extremely lucky that I have found this business. This is the second time I have brought my car to John West Auto and have had a 5 star experience both times. And this is the second time that this business has saved me a lot of money by providing reliable, quality work at a decent price. If you are having any car work done I recommend going here.

I had an oil change done at a Meineke near my house recently (purely because it was close and my car was overdue) After spending 40 mins there the woman at the desk told me that the mechanic had found multiple issues with my car while he was changing the oil. She stated that I needed to have a service, a tune up, the spark plugs replaced, the front brake pads rotors resurfaced, rear pads resurfaced and the front and rear sway bar end links replaced as the boots dry rotted. Not knowing much about cars I taken off guard because she was proposing about a 1000$ worth of work (by their estimation) and she stated that my front brakes only had 5% left on them and it was imperative that I get them fixed immediately. I told her I would think about it and asked for a copy of the list. I wanted to run all this by John West Auto since he done an excellent job before on my car when it needed a catalytic converter replaced a year or so ago.

John West took my car for the day did a thorough inspection including removing all 4 tires to check the brakes and told me that the car did need a tune up (due for it's mileage) and the spark plugs needed to be replaced but everything else was fine. The brakes both front and back were only at 50% and had many thousands of miles left on them. He said that they did not need to be replaced at this time. The other place was either preying on my auto ignorance or simply trying to dupe every person that walks in the door!

After 2 very positive experiences at John West Auto I will not be taking my car anywhere else for any kind of car maintenance, no matter how big or small! I could not recommend them more highly.

Over the course of several wee...

Over the course of several weeks i discussed the work i needed performed on my classic car with John. The car was fully restored many years ago and had just been pulled from storage so needed some basic maintenance work performed. I discussed the work i needed performed with John and sent him pictures. This morning I had the car towed on a flatbed to his shop at the scheduled time to have the work performed. When I arrived it started to mist outside so I asked John if we could bring the car inside and talk through the list of work. His response was the car was already wet so we didn't need to bring it inside. Not wanting to argue over this point I began to go through the list of items. While discussing the first item on the list he stops and says I don't think I'm the right guy to work on your car. I was confused by this since nothing had changed from my list and asked what was wrong that he now couldn't work on the car. His response was "something isn't right here, you bring the car in the rain and then want it out of the rain, something isn't right here". I assure him everything is fine, i'm here to have the agreed upon work performed and he just keeps repeating how I brought it there in the rain. Needless to say John was extremey unprofessional to let a scheduled customer that waited three weeks to get an appt. take time and money out of his pocket to have a car towed to his shop just to be turned away. I would never trust my vehicle with John or any of his mechanics. I'm truly suprised he can stay in business with his attitude and disrespect of customers.

John, I agree this is America and you have the right to pick your customers. However, you should also respect your customers and their time. You were well aware of the repair list and the high quality of the car before I had my car towed over and took time off work. It should have been no surprise that I wanted the car inside after it started misting. If after seeing the car you felt your level of service was not up to the condition of the car you should have simply discussed this with me instead to just turning and walking away. Also, I never called you dumb, I simply made the observation you were crazy. I apologize, I let your poor handling of the situation get to me. I stand by opinion Of never doing business with you again and warn others to look elseware.

If I'm not mistaken, this is still America & we have rights. I did not feel comfortable after interviewing this customer, about working on his classic Mustang - which was nice. I offered to pay for the tow and he started calling me 'dumb f***' & other names, so I'm sure I made the right decision not to work on his car.JOHN WEST

John and his guys are solid, reliable, friendly, and they really know their cars! Whether it's a simple oil change for my daily driver or a full on engine and transmission build for my classic muscle car, you cannot go wrong here. The whole shop is clean, the mechanics work foreign and domestic cars with equal ease, and John cares if your car continues to run after it leaves his shop. When my friends and family need work done, I recommend only one shop, and they're still amazed at how good the service is! Expect to find a fun classic in the parking lot, too. He gets the best cars to work on sometimes. :D I've been a customer of John's for more than 10 years now. I am very happy.

I find John West, the employee...

I find John West, the employees at the shop and the work to be the best in North Carolina. If you need a simple oil change to a major swap - John and his staff can do it.

They have what it takes to get it done. I know first hand as I have had simple oil changes to major resotrations. I have had other shops failures fixed by John and his staff in the time he said as well. Most shops say ," IT WILL BE DONE FRIDAY " and its not. With John, it is. He is truthful, dependable, and above all honest.

The shop when I first went there, the thing that stood out - was the cleanliness. In my book, a clean shop is a good shop. Organized, detailed, not a bunch of yahoo's sitting around talking about the game or what beer they had last night. It is not a tire shop with naked girl calandars. It is a professional shop run by professionals that get your car, regardless of the color of your SKIN black, white, green, blue , no one cares, and what you need done, in and out of the shop to your satisfaction.

I went to get this shop's adddress to have my car towed there, and saw the other postings, and I was appalled, as I have been to this FAMILY man's , professional run shop, so I want any browser reader to see the real deal. Thanks, Rich in North Kakalakeee.

This auto repair shop is the place to go to work on your sports cars. John West is 100% the best of the best. There is no other auto repair shop that can hook up your vehicle with the muscle and power that you want. His work on classic vehicles is absolutely phenomenal. Go by his shop and check out his rebuilds!

The worst experience I have ever had in doing business in 40 years, i had several phone conversations with John and all I was doing was bring my car in to give it a tuneup,I get it flat bedded to his shop and he comes out shouting get this f#%ckin piece of sh$t out of here, i NEVER told him it was a restored car but I also didn't want anything else but a tuneup, true the paint wasn't great but give me a break it wasn't falling apart or dented. And yes he kept calling it (1970 old 442) a piece of junk and that I would need to leave him thousands of dollars to even leave it there! This is MY baby for the past twenty years so it was like a knife thru the heart :( Don't waist your time with hiM!!!!!!!
