Vaccination
Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital is proud to support Guiding Eyes for the Blind by providing free veterinary care and vaccinations for foster puppies that are being raised for training as guide dogs. This wonderful organization helps raise and socialize potential guide puppies from eight weeks to maturity.
Veterinary Ophthalmology
Dr. Nusbaum has been with Bayleaf since graduating from NCSU in May of 2021. She loves being a general practitioner, but is especially interested in ophthalmology and surgery. Dr. Nusbaum takes great pride in being a part of the human animal bond, from the first puppy/kitten appointment to geriatric health. When not working, Dr. Nusbaum is almost always at the stable riding her horse Smokey. Currently she lives in Raleigh with her husband Devin, her two kitties ChaCha and Tango, and her dog “Mac”arena.
Comprehensive Examination
Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital supports the Wake Med Hospitality Pets program. These pets must pass a rigorous behavioral evaluation to participate in the program as well as a compete physical examination and disease screening process every six months. This service is provided free of charge to any pet participating in the Wake Med Hospitality Pet program. These pets make regular visits to the Wake Med campus. Their visits brighten the lives of Wake Med patients as well as the medical staff.

Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital offers all routine surgical procedures as well as many advanced surgical techniques and procedures not performed at many veterinary hospitals. All patients are carefully screened prior to surgery and anesthetics are specifically tailored to your pet. Surgical services and facilities include: fully trained veterinary and technical staff, to ensure the safest, most efficient, state-of-the-art procedures for your pet; heated surgery tables for greater comfort and safety; advanced sterilization techniques; ECG and oxygen saturation monitors; intensive after surgery care and full blood testing. The doctors and nursing staff take great care to insure that our patients receive the best pain management possible. Appropriate pain medication is given continuously starting before surgery until your pet is healed and pain free. Our doctors have all received special training and ongoing continuing education in the field of pain management.
Skin Condition and Allergy Treatment
Regular grooming is important for reasons beyond appearance but is important for keeping your pet healthy, clean and comfortable. Many skin and coat conditions can be prevented or managed by an appropriate grooming routine. Some breeds require more regular grooming than others.

Dental treatment followed by appropriate home care will insure that your pet has whiter teeth, better breath, and a healthier life. Periodontal infection has been shown in pets and people to contribute to a variety of chronic disease conditions including kidney disease, heart disease and liver disease. Dental Surgery
Regular professional cleaning is important to maintaining your pet’s health. We use modern ultrasonic scalers to clean each tooth above and below the gum line. Dental technicians polish teeth to create a smooth, lustrous tooth surface more resistant to plaque buildup. Fluoride treatments help strengthen enamel and reduce tooth sensitivity. Our doctors have received advance dental training and capable and qualified to perform extractions of a variety of teeth from the simplest of extractions to those requiring oral surgery. Each patient’s teeth are carefully examined and then radiographed using digital x-ray. With complicated extractions, pain management is a priority. We use nerve blocks just as your own dentist would use so that pets do not experience pain during recovery from anesthesia. Your pet may go home with pain medication and antibitotics after complicated or multiple extractions.

X-Ray
Bayleaf Veterinary Hospital has invested in state of the art digital radiography. Digital radiography allows radiographs (x-rays) to be taken and processed in seconds and provides image quality that far exceeds the images acquired using film. This means faster and more accurate diagnosis of your pets medical condition. Digital radiography also allows for lower doses of radiation for your pet and the attending staff.

Although the cost of preparing a blind person and guide dog for their new life together is nearly $40,000, there is no charge to our students. Expenses include the breeding, puppy raising and dog training programs, veterinary care, the one-month residential class for the blind students and their new companions and lifetime follow-up services to our graduates.
